Welding is one of the skilled trades where the salary spread is genuinely wide — entry-level structural welders and experienced pipe welders can look at very different paychecks in the same state. Here's the real data, organized by experience and specialty.
Florida Welding Median Salary (BLS, May 2023)
Bureau of Labor Statistics data: Florida welders earned a median annual wage of $47,980 in May 2023. That's approximately $23.07 per hour at standard full-time hours.
National median: $49,920. Florida is close to the national benchmark, with cost-of-living advantages in many parts of the state compared to higher-paying but more expensive metros.
Salary by Experience and Specialty
- Entry-level (0–2 years, structural/MIG): $36,000 to $42,000 in most Florida markets
- Mid-level (2–5 years): $42,000 to $52,000
- Experienced welder (5+ years): $52,000 to $62,000
- Pipe welders (2G, 5G, 6G certified): $60,000 to $85,000+
- Structural/underwater welders: Premium rates, specialized demand
The pay gap between structural welding and pipe welding is significant. Welders certified in 5G and 6G pipe positions — which CTI's program includes — command materially higher wages than structural-only welders.
Why Pipe Welding Pays More
Pipe welding is harder. Full stop. The 6G position requires welding a pipe fixed at a 45-degree angle, which means you're welding overhead, flat, horizontal, and vertical without rotating the pipe. It's technically demanding, which is why few welders pursue it — and why employers pay a premium for those who can do it.
A structural welder and a 6G-certified pipe welder can have a $20,000 to $40,000 annual pay difference for essentially the same number of years in the trade. CTI's program includes 2G, 5G, and 6G pipe positions — not as extras, but as part of the standard curriculum.
AWS Certification Impact
American Welding Society (AWS) certifications are the industry standard for validating welding proficiency. Employers in construction, manufacturing, and aerospace specifically look for AWS credentials.
CTI graduates may be eligible to sit for AWS certification exams after program completion. Having AWS credentials alongside your training certificate:
- Signals proven skill beyond completion of a course
- Opens doors at larger employers and government contractors
- Can justify higher starting wages in a negotiation
- Positions you for advancement faster than non-certified peers
Brevard County Welding Market
Brevard County has an advantage most Florida counties don't: the Space Coast's aerospace and defense sector. Companies supporting Kennedy Space Center, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and SpaceX operations need welders who can work to tight tolerances. Aerospace welding pays above the general manufacturing average — and it's in our backyard.
Beyond aerospace, Brevard's maritime sector (boat manufacturing, port operations), general construction, and the manufacturing corridor between Melbourne and Titusville all hire welders consistently.
The Full Picture
CTI's Welding Technology program costs $12,700. At the $38,000 entry-level salary, that investment is covered in four months of full-time employment. For a 6G-certified pipe welder starting at $62,000, it's covered in two and a half months.
The Welding program is 42 weeks. Start this cohort, and you could be working as a certified welder in about ten months.
